Starting the Game
- Highlight the 'MADDEN NFL 09' icon in your phone's Game Menu.
- Press 'OK or 5' key to start the game.
- After the splash screens, the game's Main Menu will appear.
Game Objective
Madden NFL 09 features all 32 NFL teams. You can play a quick game with selected teams, or play a season to lead your team to the Super Bowl.
Game Modes
Play Now: Access Play Now from the main menu. Play Now allows you to quickly jump into a game and play as the 2008 Super Bowl teams. You receive the kickoff as the default home team. The default quarter length is 3 minutes.
Season: Select a 1, 7 or 16 game season length. Select 3, 5 or 7 minute quarter lengths.
Exhibition: Play a single game using any team. Select 3, 5 or 7 minute quarter lengths.

- New Game/Season: Choose your team and settings to start a season.
- Play Now: Play instantly as the 2008 Super Bowl teams.

PASSING
To pass in Madden NFL 09, press 'OK or 5' key to hike the ball. After ball hike, press 'OK or 5' key to activate FVP (Field Vision Passing) icons. Look for receivers with green or yellow icons and press his D-pad icon symbol (↑, ↓, ← or →) to pass to that specific receiver. FVP timer duration is based on QB accuracy. The more accurate the QB, the more time you will have to complete passes. Avoid throwing to receivers with red icons to avoid dropped passes and interceptions.
INSTANT IMPACT PLAYS / OFFENSE
Instant Impact Plays are available for use after ball snap on non-pass plays. A large 'OK' icon is displayed at the bottom of the screen to alert you when to initiate the Instant Impact Play menu. When within optimum activation range, the icon center text will display 'white' to alert you to press 'OK or 5' key to activate the Instant Impact Play menu. Once activated, the game will pause to allow you unlimited time to cycle through various Instant Impact Plays (Speed Burst, Stiff Arm, Power, Hurdle, etc.). Press 'OK or 5' key to execute selected Instant Impact Play. Repeat this process until you score or the play ends.
INSTANT IMPACT PLAYS / DEFENSE
Instant Impact Plays are available for use after ball snap. A large 'OK' icon is displayed at the bottom of the screen to alert you when to initiate the Instant Impact Plays menu. When within optimum activation range for tackling, deflection or interception, the icon center text will display 'white' to alert you to press 'OK or 5' key to activate the Instant Impact Plays menu. Once activated, the game will pause to allow you unlimited time to cycle through various Instant Impact Plays (Speed Burst, Tackle, Big Hit, Deflection, Interception, etc). Press 'OK or 5' key to execute selected Instant Impact Play. Repeat this process until play ends.
Breaking Tackles - When running with the ball on offense, check the ball carrier's status disc color. If the disc is green, keep running ahead. When the disc is yellow or red, press the 'OK or 5' key to activate Instant Impact Plays menu. Once activated, select a move to avoid being tackled.
QB Scramble - When ready to scramble from pocket on pass plays, press 'OK or 5' key if FVP icons are displayed. Pressing 'OK or 5' key with FVP icons displayed will instantly turn QB into ball carrier. Once QB becomes ball carrier, the QB can execute Instant Impact Plays as they apply to QB skill set.
QB Scramble During FVP - With FVP activated, press right soft key (RSK) to deactivate FVP. This allows QB to scramble while still in the pocket. Press RSK again to re-activate FVP passing icons and allow QB to pass.
Running Game - After pressing 'OK or 5' key to hike the ball, the game will execute the entire play until you use the D-pad. The game will run and perform special moves to gain positive yards if you are not familiar with the controls. This is a great way to watch the action unfold until you are familiar with all controls.
Passing Game - After pressing 'OK or 5' key to hike the ball, the game will execute the play by moving the QB in the pocket. The game-controlled QB will move, but will not pass to a receiver until you decide to use FVP. Some game-controlled QBs will scramble out of the pocket based on their real life attributes and characteristics.
Pass Completion - When eligible receiver icon is green, improve your pass completion chances by immediately pressing his D-pad icon symbol (↑, ↓, ← or →), as icon color can quickly change to red. Always throw to receivers with green or yellow colored icons for best pass completion chances.
Breaking Tackles - From the Instant Impact Plays menu, select 'Power' to run over a defender and gain extra yards. Only a few running backs will have the 'Power' Instant Impact Play.
Big Hit Tackling - From the Instant Impact Plays menu, select 'Big Hit' when you're close to the ball carrier to force a fumble.
Speed Burst - From the Instant Impact Plays menu, select 'Speed Burst' to briefly increase ball carrier or defender speed.
Instant Impact Plays - Available offensive and defensive Instant Impact Plays will vary based on player attributes.
Tackling - Chase the opposing player until you get close enough for his status disc to turn yellow or red. Then press 'OK or 5' key to dive tackle. If you do not dive tackle, your opponent may break free from your grasp and keep on running, so be prepared to continue chasing him down.
Recovering Fumbles - After a ball is fumbled, quickly press the right soft key to select your player nearest to the loose ball to recover the fumble.
Playing Defense - Before the ball is snapped, press the right soft key to change to a defensive player of your choice. The game will not snap the ball while you toggle through defensive players, allowing you time to make your selection. Player names will be displayed on screen as you toggle between players.
Quick Snap - The ball will be snapped as soon as you press the 'OK or 5' key on offense or defense.
Telestrator Display Offense - When running the ball, a telestrator arrow will display the direction each special move will take the ball carrier. Use this telestrator to guide your ball carrier to gain positive yards.
Telestrator Display Defense - When playing defense, a teletrator arrow will display the selected defender's pursuit angle toward the ball carrier. Use the telestrator to track down the ball carrier. Note, defender selected to execute the Instant Impact Plays will flash.
Switching Players On Defense - After ball snap, press the d-pad ↑ or ↓ to cycle through defenders. Note, there is a special icon in the upper right corner of the screen with ↑ and ↓ icons.
Winning Blocks - From the defensive Instant Impact Plays menu, select Swim, Bull Rush and Spin to get past blockers.
Ask Madden Assistance - On the play calling screen, press '*' key at anytime to receive John Madden's suggested play for best results. You will see a photo of John Madden under the best play for that particular down, distance to first down and time remaining.
Successful Instant Impact Plays - The game will pause for a short time. The ball carrier will flash and a text message will appear to alert you to a successful Instant Impact Play
After Play Cut Scenes - After play cut scenes from various camera angles and perspectives are displayed after these events:
- QB sack
- Loss of Down
- First Down
- Touchdown
- Turnover
Vibration Occurrence - Vibration will occur during the following actions:
- Touchdown
- Interception
- Fumble
- QB sack
- BIG HIT to knock the ball loose on pass play
What's the quickest way to get right into the game?
Simply press 'OK or 5' key after the 'Press OK to Play Now' message is displayed on any of the splash screens when starting the game. The game will ask you, 'Play Now or Main Menu?' If you select Play Now, you will quickly jump into a game as the default home team from the 2008 Super Bowl.
What other game modes are there?

Yes. Madden NFL 09 allows you to make in-game substitutions while. However, the user must press 'CLR' key to return to the Main Menu screen. From the Main Menu, you can access the Front Office option for team substitutions.
How can I complete more passes in Madden NFL 09?
To complete more passes, throw to open receivers with green icons. Try to throw short to mid range passes to receivers with green or yellow icons. Longer passes are more difficult to complete. Never throw to receivers with red icons to avoid dropped passes and interceptions.

Game progress is automatically saved in all game modes in these situations:

Will I lose my previously saved game by starting a new game?
Yes. Starting a new game will cause you to lose the previous saved game in any mode.
How do I resume play where I left off?
From the Main Menu, select 'Resume Game' in any mode and you will resume play at the end of your previous play.
How do I call time-outs during play?
You are allowed three time-outs each half. You can ONLY call a time-out before or after a play. To call time out, press the '#' key.
