We had a chance to sit down and talk with Ryan Winterholler, Producer on NBA LIVE on the iPhone®/iPod touch®, and ask few questions about the game. Check out the interview to find out to get the inside scoop on EA Mobile's latest EA Sports title to hit the App Store¿.
1) What was the biggest obstacle in bringing NBA Live to the iPod touch?
Probably the biggest obstacle was coming up with a really slick and user friendly control scheme. Developing basketball games can be very complex and you really have to focus on the controls design to give the user the best experience. I believe we created an awesome control scheme that is good for beginners and also advanced players that are used to playing NBA Games.
2) What feature are you most excited about in this game?
Our accelerometer Free Throw. The free throw mechanic of actually mimicking your follow through and release is what we wanted to accomplish here. By tilting your device backwards and brining the players arms up and flicking your device straight forward to hit the free throw is a feature especially made for NBA Live for the iPod Touch.
3) What's your favorite NBA basketball team and player?
Lakers and you know who... The Black Mamba! Kobe Bryant.
4) Do you actually play basketball? If so how much?
Yes! I've been playing basketball since I could hold a ball. I was doing 360 dunks on the Dr J hoop at the age of 8. Grew up playing the sport and still love it to this day. I now try to play at least once a week to stay in shape.
5) Would you say you're the best basketball player at EALA?
HAHA! I would say I'm at least in the top 3.
6) What best describes your style of play?
I am a 6'1 point guard, so I try to do all A,B, and C. If I see the open lane, I'll take it. If my defender is off me too much I'll shoot it. (usually from anywhere) If another player switches on me after blowing by my defender, I'll look for a pass. I've been known for being a little bit of a ball hog, but it gets the job done. :)
- Take it to the rack
- Drain shots from downtown
- Dishing it off for the assist
7) What's your favorite EA Sports basketball game going all the way back to "Julius Irving / Larry Bird One on One"?
That was a pretty good one and technology has really come a long way in making games so much more realistic now. But, I would still say my favorite EA basketball game of all time would have to be Jordan vs. Bird: One on One. I played the game so much it actually broke my commodore 64.
8) Which unlockable legend are you most excited to play within the ipod touch game?
Well, this is a tough decision. All the legends in our game are All-Stars and were really good in their time. I don't think I can pick one. So, I would have to say Magic and Bird. Posting up on these little point guards with Magic is fun to dominate. And... draining long 3's with Bird is my forte. They are both ultimate legends in my mind and I get excited playing with both of them.
