Game Rules
Roll 5 dice up to three times each turn, and try to create high-scoring combinations. After each roll, you can choose to hold any number of those dice and then re-roll the remaining dice. Your goal is to match your dice combination to a high-scoring category.
After your rolls, select a scoring category. Each category can be chosen only once. You must choose a category each turn, even if your dice combination doesn't match an open category. If the dice don't match the category, you score zero points.
Scoring
There are two scoring categories in Yahtzee: Upper and Lower.
The Upper categories let you score points for rolling doubles on your dice. The categories are Ones to Sixes. You score the sum of your dice that match the chosen category. For example, placing three 3s in the Threes category scores 9 points (3x3=9). Placing four 5s in the Fives category scores 20 points (4x5=20).
The Lower Categories let you score points for matching patterns of dice. The Lower categories are as follows:
- Three of a Kind: At least 3 dice with the same value. Score the sum of all dice.
- Four of a Kind: At least 4 dice with the same value. Score the sum of all dice.
- Full House: Two dice of the same kind and a three of a different kind. Score 25 points.
- Small Straight: At least 4 dice with consecutive values (i.e., 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, or 3-4-5-6). Score 30 points.
- Large Straight: All five dice display consecutive values (i.e., 1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6). Score 40 points.
- Chance: Any set of dice that doesn't fit in any other category. Score the sum of the roll.
- Yahtzee: All five dice have the same value. Score 50 points.
There are three available bonuses: Upper, Lower and Yahtzee. The bonuses are detailed below.
- Upper Score Bonus: If the total score for the Upper categories is 63 or higher, 35 bonus points are added to the total score.
- Yahtzee Bonus: If the Yahtzee category is closed with a score of 50 and then another Yahtzee is scored, 100 bonus points are added to the total score.
- Yahtzee Joker: If the Yahtzee category is closed and then another Yahtzee is scored, any open Lower category scores full points.
Game Modes
There are four Yahtzee game modes: Classic, Duplicate, Rainbow and Battle. Each mode has unique scoring rules and gameplay.
- Classic Yahtzee is a standard Yahtzee game: Each player takes turns rolling and scoring.
- Duplicate Yahtzee is a two-player game that adds an element of strategy to Yahtzee. At the start of each turn, 15 dice are rolled in secret. Each player plays with the exact same 15 dice and tries to earn the highest score. The winner will be the one who made the best dice-holding decisions and obtains the highest score in most categories.
- Rainbow Yahtzee is played with colored dice (Green, Blue and Red), and uses Classic rules plus all-new color categories and a Rainbow bonus.
- Colorful House: Any color combination of 2 dice of one color and 3 dice of a different color (e.g., 2 red dice and 3 blue dice). Scores 15 points.
- Green flush: All dice must be green. Scores 35 points.
- Blue flush: All dice must be blue. Scores 35 points.
- Red flush: All dice must be red. Scores 35 points.
- Rainbow Bonus: When earning a Joker, the player scores full points for any open Lower or Rainbow category.
- Rainbow Yahtzee Bonus: If the player gets a Yahtzee bonus with all dice of the same color, the bonus is 200 points instead of 100.
- Battle Yahtzee lets 2 to 4 players battle against each other. Each player starts with 100 points and tries to bring all opponents to zero points. Players attack a chosen opponent by scoring in lower categories, and heal themselves by scoring in upper categories.
Each scoring category can only be used once every three turns. Closed categories re-open after three turns.
